New York City police said six people were hit by gunfire at a subway station in the Bronx, leaving one dead and five injured.
A New York Police Department spokeswoman said by telephone that no arrests had been made in the shooting and it was unclear what condition the five wounded were in.
Local media, citing anonymous police sources, reported that the five victims were not in mortal danger.
The local ABC affiliate, citing anonymous police sources, reported that one person died from their injuries and five others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
A spokeswoman for the New York Police Department said they did not yet have details on exactly how many people were shot or the status of the victims.
Crime is rare on the New York City subway, with about 3.8 million rides on the system on an average weekday, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reported 570 serious assaults for all of 2023.
Shootings are particularly rare: in 2022, a man with a gun wounded 10 people on a train passing through Brooklyn, the first mass shooting on the subway since 1984. (Reuters).
