Popular Canon printers are vulnerable to critical vulnerabilities

Several current Canon printers are vulnerable to critical flaws that allow attackers to execute code on the devices over the Internet. The message says: Updating or disconnecting the printers from the network.

Attackers can crack Canon online office printers and either execute their own code or render them inaccessible via a DDoS attack. Devices that are directly connected to the power grid are vulnerable. This affects the following printers:

  • i-Sensys LBP673Cdw
  • i-Sensys MF752Cdw
  • i-Sensys MF754Cdw
  • i-Sensys
  • i-Sensys

These devices are all vulnerable to six vulnerabilities:

  • CVE-2023-6229
  • CVE-2023-6230
  • CVE-2023-6231
  • CVE-2023-6232
  • CVE-2023-6233
  • CVE-2023-6234

The iSensys

  • CVE-2024-0244

Critical errors

The seven errors are almost all critical and their possible exploitation is varied. This allows attackers to execute their own code (and potentially break into the network), crash the devices, or conduct DDoS attacks. Canon states that no active abuse of the leaks has been detected at this time.

The solution won’t surprise you. Anyone who has an affected printer should update the firmware as quickly as possible. Canon also recommends using the devices in a secure environment with a firewall where access to the printer may be restricted. This is a good idea regardless of the faults, but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t plug the leaks.
