If you ask, ChatGPT will soon be able to remember personal information about you. You can also clear the chatbot’s memory.

OpenAI announces a new update for ChatGPT in a blog. The chatbot will soon have a memory that will allow it to remember personal things you reveal about yourself in conversations. In subsequent conversations, the chatbot adjusts its responses accordingly to provide users with a more personalized experience.

The things ChatGPT can remember are varied, from your job to whether you have children to the answering style you prefer. For example, if you tell ChatGPT that you prefer notes with headings, bullet points, and action items, ChatGPT will summarize text or meetings for you more quickly this way. Another example from OpenAI is that if you tell the chatbot about your company and ask you to create a social media post in a later conversation, ChatGPT should automatically know what it is for.

Check storage

You may also not want ChatGPT to remember everything about you. OpenAI explains in the blog how to check ChatGPT’s memory. First, the chatbot only remembers information that you explicitly request, for example by including “Remember…” in your prompt. You can use the settings to make ChatGPT “forget” everything again. There will be a new one personalizationAdded window to settings. Sensitive information such as medical history will not be stored unless you specifically instruct ChatGPT to do so again.

Additionally, there will also be a new conversation option called Temporary conversations. The content of this conversation is strictly confidential and will therefore not be saved by ChatGPT and the conversation will not subsequently appear in your history. ChatGPT’s new storage features will initially be rolled out on a small scale to test with a limited audience. We don’t see it in our account yet. Later, OpenAI will also introduce storage capabilities for custom GPTs.
