A “security consortium” is being created in the United States to guide the development of AI. All major players in the industry are represented, including Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Nvidia and Meta.
The American NIST, creator of the well-known cybersecurity framework, announces the creation of the AI Security Institute At. In this consortium, parties from the public and private sectors come together and exchange data to control AI technology. The organization has the following goals:
Companies from the industry announce that they will register for the consortium by January 15th. More than six hundred organizations did so, with NIST representing a sample of 200 parties. All major players from the technology and AI industry are taking part, including Apple, Anthropic, Cisco, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Hugging Face, Microsoft, Meta, NVIDIA, OpenAI, Salesforce. Sometimes competitors can also agree on common goals.
Security and regulation of AI technology is also an important issue on the other side of the ocean. Following the example of the European Union, the White House approved a package of rules for AI companies last month. However, concrete measures seem to be taking place more quickly in the USA. The European AI law continues to turn the administrative wheels and must first go through several rounds of approval before it can come into force.
The tech giants have also previously joined forces in the AI Alliance. This initiative, led by Meta and IBM, aims to develop open standards and models around artificial intelligence. The main absentee from this project is, slightly ironically, OpenAI.
