Behind the wonderful pictures of the universe there is always the work of several telescopes, each operating in its own range of electromagnetic radiation. The full power of “Webb” or “Hubble” cannot convey the beauty of space without data in the X-ray, radio frequency and ultraviolet ranges. As we move optical and infrared telescopes up a level, we must not forget to create more advanced devices for other frequencies.

As is known, NASA has officially approved the creation of a new generation ultraviolet telescope, which should be sent into space in the early 30s. This will be the Ultraviolet Explorer (UVEX) mission to study the sky in the near and far ultraviolet spectrum. An earlier similar vehicle, the Galaxy Explorer (GALEX), operated from 2003 to 2013. The new telescope will be 50-100 times more sensitive than GALEX instruments.

The new ultraviolet telescope will face two tasks. First, it will need to map the sky in the ultraviolet range. Second, the telescope will be able to rapidly change direction to obtain images of transient processes: supernova explosions, stellar mergers, black hole jets and neutron stars, and other energetic events. This would be an invaluable contribution to gravitational wave observations of the sky in situations where it is very difficult to detect the source of the gravitational wave.

When we examine the sky in ultraviolet light, we will be able to see the hottest objects in it. First of all, these are young and old stars in which the processes in the cores are in critical stages of activity. Additionally, data in the ultraviolet range will allow us to see galaxies with low metal content and a number of other objects.

The cost of preparing the UVEX mission is estimated to be $300 million, excluding launch costs, and the telescope will be designed for two years of scientific study. The main details of the mission have already been worked out, as has the technical and economic justification for the project. Production of apparatus and scientific instruments will begin within a year or two.
