“Today, we are acting on behalf of millions of New Yorkers to hold these companies accountable for their role in this crisis (…) The complaint and action plan are part of a larger action that will impact the lives of our youth, our city, and our communities by for many years,” Adams said.

New York declares social networks a “threat to the mental health” of minors

On January 24, New York authorities declared social networks a “threat to mental health” and equated them in danger to drugs and weapons.

“We cannot stand by and allow big tech companies to monetize our children’s privacy,” the mayor said at the time, citing a Department of Mental Health report that found 77% of children high school students spend three hours or more the day before screen in free time.

Social networks make the user feel the need to interact with them

The filed complaint describes some of the social media’s tactics, such as “using algorithms to keep users connected and encourage compulsive use,” creating gaming mechanisms when developing apps, and abusing “reciprocity,” or making users feel the need to interact with an app.

New York became the first major city to sue the five big tech companies (some of them among the queens of Wall Street), but New York was preceded by 41 states that sued Meta (owner of Facebook and Instagram) over those same reasons. in October last year. (EFE)
