He Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities decided this Thursday to cancel the controversial project that was conceived covering the Mykerin pyramid with granite blocksthe smallest of the Giza necropolises, with the aim of returning it to its original condition, the department said in a statement.

The project, unveiled in late January in collaboration with a group of Japanese archaeologists, sparked controversy in the scientific community as many considered it to be a violation of UNESCO conventions regarding restoration processes for endangered sites. World Heritage.

For this reason, the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities decided to form a committee of experts headed by a famous archaeologist. Zahi Hawassto assess the viability of the project and decide whether to continue or suspend it.

This committee, composed of experts from the United States, the Czech Republic and Germany, concluded this Thursday that the restoration process is not viable, stressing that “the need to maintain the pyramid’s current state without any additions due to its exceptional global archaeological value.”

The plan called for using the original blocks of the pyramid of Mikerinus, which were buried or scattered around the necropolis as a result of an earthquake a thousand years ago, but experts determined that “It is impossible to confirm the exact original location of any of these granite blocks.”
