The scientific instrument called “SHERLOC” placed at the end of the Perseverance rover’s robotic arm began to malfunction.
Sherlock, built at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is needed to examine rocks on Mars, looking for organic compounds and minerals that have been altered by water and may contain traces of ancient extraterrestrial life. When Perseverance finds an interesting rock on Mars, it scans it with the Sherlock laser and then takes a close-up photo of it with the Watson device.
The information and images obtained by the engineers showed that one of Sherlock’s two covers, which prevent dust from accumulating in the instrument chambers, was partially open. In this position, the valve interferes with operations because Perseverance cannot use the laser and collect spectroscopy data.
Engineers are trying to find out what caused the malfunction and why the lid remained partially open. To do this, experts sent commands to the device that changed the amount of energy supplied to it.
