Samsung has been making foldable phones for five years, with the latest models called the Samsung Galaxy Flip 5 and Galaxy Fold 5. They are pioneers here, but that doesn’t stop the manufacturer from looking further into the future. In a patent discovered by Caliber Cleaning, we see a model similar to the Galaxy Fold 5, but one side of the screen is foldable.
That seems like an odd choice, except for those who have been using the device for a while. When opened, the size is large but strange. The screen is almost square. By making one side rollable, you get closer to a 3:2 or 4:3 tablet ratio.
The website suddenly created a few mock-ups of the design to get a better idea of the design:
It goes without saying that a patent application does not equate to a new device. Samsung can claim this idea as their own, but still work on the concept for years until it’s perfect. Or over time it realizes that the design is not feasible and ends up in the trash. There have been many wild rollable screen concepts over the years. None ever went into mass production.
However, that doesn’t change the fact that the concept definitely makes you dream. We’re now seeing it in the form of a foldable, rollable device. Whether we want to know the price if it ever comes is another question. And as always, we must take such news with caution. The patent application appears legitimate to us when we analyze the PDF document. If you want to go through everything in detail, you can go here.
