Within the scope of the OSIRIS-REx mission to study the asteroid Bennu, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) delivered 121.6 grams of rocks and dust collected on the celestial body to Earth, twice as much as planned.
This was reported by Universe Today, according to Ukrinform’s report.
It was noted that the materials would be placed in containers and sent to the researchers. More than 200 researchers around the world will take samples from the asteroid.
Most will go to scientists at NASA and institutions in the United States, while the rest will go to researchers at institutions affiliated with the Canadian Space Agency, the Japanese Aerospace Agency (JAXA) and other partner countries.
Canada will receive 4% of the samples, giving the country’s scientific community direct access to asteroid samples sent to Earth for the first time.
NASA also said that 70 percent of the samples collected on the asteroid will be passed on to future generations.
As Ukrinform reported, on May 10, 2021, the Osiris-Rex spacecraft of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) left the orbit of the asteroid Bennu and headed towards Earth.
The probe used a 3.4-meter-long robotic arm to collect dust and rock samples from the asteroid.
In September 2023, the Osiris-Rex capsule returned to Earth with samples.
