Several Russian regions are testing unblocking VPN services that allow access to resources blocked by Russian authorities.
According to Ukrinform, this was reported by the Telegram channel GlobalCheck, which studies blockchains on RuNet.
“We argue that this is not an ‘accidental’ blocking – at least these protocols are completely obviously blocked by any DPI and in principle cannot be ‘inadvertently’ blocked and it would take no more than 5 minutes to unblock them,” – said in the message.
The publication expresses confidence that Russian authorities are testing the global blocking of VPN protocols in this way. The truth is, VPN is required not only for some of your usual VPN services to work, but also for creating internal networks of different companies. Accordingly, the Russian government wants to understand how this will affect their business – what harm it will cause to companies, what they will do, how quickly and other consequences.
As GlobalCheck reported the previous night, l2TP and IPsec servers (the protocols used for VPN connections) were not available in West Siberia and Krasnodar, and IPsec was not available in Rostov-on-Don.
With the onset of full-scale military aggression in Ukraine, Russian authorities recognized Meta as an extremist and blocked Facebook and Instagram, as well as websites of all independent media. According to the Roskomsvoboda project, more than a thousand resources were blocked for publishing information about Russia’s so-called “special operation” in Ukraine.
On May 26, it became known that the Prosecutor General of Roskomnadzor began to include it in unscheduled inspections of regional Internet operators for compliance with the blocking law.
Roskomnadzor started blocking VPN services in Russia in the fall of 2021. Among the blocked – Cloudflare WARP, Nord VPN, RedShield VPN, Opera VPN and more than a dozen services.
