Lula’s adviser says Israel’s declaration of Brazil’s president as “persona non grata” is “absurd”

Advisor to the President of Brazil on international affairs, Celso Amorim, described this Monday as “absurd” Israel’s decision to declare President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva “persona non grata”after he compared the Gaza offensive to the Holocaust.

“This is absurd”, “this”only increases Israel’s isolation“Well, “Lula is wanted all over the world, and at the moment Israel is persona non grata,” Amorim said.

The official, who was foreign minister in Lula’s first two terms (2003-2011), explained to reporters that he had not yet spoken to the president on the matter and that he was speaking in his personal capacity about Israel’s decision.

The reaction of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government was announced this Monday after Lula, at a press conference held last Friday in Ethiopia, equated the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip to the Holocaust.

“What is happening in the Gaza Strip is not war, it is genocide”Lula said after the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, where he believed confrontation “between a very trained army, women and children” had not happened before in history, except “when Hitler decided to kill the Jews.”

“We will not forgive and we will not forget: on my own behalf and on behalf of the citizens of Israel, I informed the President Lula that he is an unwelcome person in Israel until he apologizes and retracts his words,” Katz said after meeting with Meyer.

The meeting with the ambassador took place not, as usual, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but at the Holocaust Museum, which has great symbolic meaning for Jews.
