TikTok is without a doubt the most successful social network among the youngest, to the extent that we’ve already seen other services try to reproduce some of its key aspects to a greater or lesser extent. The main goal is of course to try to attract some of this young audience, but also to try to take a form that has proven very successful and use it with mainstream users. Nothing new under the Sun, really, as it’s a very common way to proceed.
So we can confirm that we are talking about a very successful service… in terms of traffic, because in other aspects however he had to reckon with many complications. Many will remember, for example, his historic confrontation with Donald Trump, then President of the United States, which even led to his blockade in the North American country, a blockade that, yes, was short-lived.
On this side of the Atlantic, TikTok has also been questioned on more than one occasionto the extent that the European Commission even banned its use on official devices a year ago, which not only told us about the European organization’s distrust of ByteDance, but also told us that the service was in the spotlight, which invited us to think that at some point, sooner or later, we will know of some research on this matter.
Well, I don’t know if it’s late or soon, but the time has come because as we read in the official statement, The European Commission has opened formal proceedings against TikTok under the Digital Services Actand also not for one, but for several concepts, as stated at the beginning of the said communication:
«The European Commission has launched formal procedures to assess whether TikTok may have breached the Digital Services Act in areas related to protection of minors, advertising transparencyhe access to data for researchersas managing the risks of addictive design and harmful content.»
However, it is important to clarify that the initiation of the process It means that an in-depth investigation has begun, not that conclusions have already been drawn.. Thus, over the next few months, the Commission will analyze point by point possible violations of the DMA by TikTok. Of course, at this point the EC can, if it wishes, take new enforcement measures, such as interim measures and non-compliance decisions. However, as is usual with this type of procedure, the company will also be provided with a margin to correct any irregularities that are discovered during the investigation. However, the indications are that TikTok may be in breach of several articles of the WFD, prompting the Commission to prioritize the investigation.
