There was bad news, yes. As we said midway through last year, Disney+ is bringing the price increases it implemented in the United States to this side of the pond, including Spain. Prices have already been updated for new userswhile subscribers will be charged on their next renewal, either monthly or yearly.
In the same way, the platform uses opportunities to introduce new cheaper plan with advertising, i.e. with advertisements, in the style of traditional TV channels, following the – according to the data – successful path marked by Netflix. And they won’t be the only ones to do so: HBO Max will do the same when it’s rebranded as Max, SkyShowtime from three-quarters the same, Amazon Prime Video after its…
The excuse for this increase in subscription price is the same in all cases: to continue to offer quality original content and so on. Something that could be salvaged given the glut of content and how average it is in general, which is easily verified by going to dedicated critics.
However, aside from the always subjective impressions, the real reason for the price increase is that the vast majority of these services are not economically sustainable. Practically all of them report losses year after year, while continuing theirs competition eating race and put together a user base that makes business easier.
Coming back to Disney+, its new rates are as announced and are as follows:
Plan | Function | Price |
Disney+ Standard with ads |
|
Monthly: €5.99 |
Standard Disney+ |
|
Monthly: €8.99 Annual: €89.90 |
Disney+ Premium |
|
Monthly: €11.99 Annual: €119.90 |
The Disney+ subscription price increase thus increases by roughly 30%. With the nuances, the Disney+ Standard plan now costs what the Disney+ Premium plan used to cost, despite the fact that neither existed as such. That means Disney+ annual subscription must pay now 30 euros more for… for the same thing. Also watch out for the limitations of the standard plan, which leaves 4K, among other things.
Now we just need to see how they do with the next part of the plan, not the price part, but the profit maximization at all costs. This included, in addition to a corresponding increase, putting end of shared accountssomething that is still unknown as to how they will do it, although looking at the link left by Netflix, we can’t expect anything else either.
The question, rather questions, is how long will the consumer last? Is there a market for such an offer? How long will it take for the humans to return to the mountains with the donkey and restore the independent republic of their home?
