Since February 16th, Android 15 has been available to developers who are currently fully testing the mobile operating system. This preview gives developers insight into the path Google plans to take with Android 15. It was previously announced that Android 15 would focus on improving app performance and protecting against malware. Now there are also early signs that Android is capable of automatically hiding incoming multi-factor authentication codes from other apps on your device.
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) requires you to confirm your identity through two or more factors before gaining access. It provides an additional layer of security on top of your password. Although this is a secure way to protect your passwords, hackers are constantly finding new techniques to intercept these codes by using malicious apps on your device. The expected new update to Android 15 is intended to prevent this.
A new Android permission titled “RECEIVE_SENSITIVE_NOTIFICATIONS” must be granted by the device manufacturer. This option would work with a flag called “OTP_REDACTION” that can hide the MFA codes from your notifications. How this will actually work is not yet clear.
It is not yet known when and if this update will come. So far, this update has been found in Android 14 QPR3, which could indicate that it will make its debut in Android 15. The process is still too early to make any statements on this.
