Signal lets you share a username instead of a phone number

Encrypted messaging app Signal will soon give users the ability to contact other users using an optional username without revealing their phone number.

Signal, the encrypted messaging app, will soon introduce new support where you can create and share a username to get in touch with other users. Currently this is only possible with your phone number, but for security reasons Signal is now giving users the choice. You can add an optional username that allows users to connect with you without having to reveal your phone number. The feature is currently only available in beta.

How does it work?

Signal usernames are different from account names on social platforms. They do not serve as a login or identifier for people on Signal, but rather provide a quick way to contact you without having to reveal your phone number. You still need to provide a telephone number to register, but this is only visible to you.

To create a username in Signal, go to Institutions and then click profile. Here you can create a unique username and generate a QR code or link. Other users can send you a message this way. Users can also contact you by entering your username in the new chat bar and sending a message. The username can be changed at any time, but other users can claim your current name.

Your unique username will not be visible on your profile detail page or in your chats. Other users can only send you a message with the QR code, link or if they know the exact username. Only then can a chat be sent.
