Two Marylanders who tried to steal 5,000 iPhones worth millions of dollars from Apple were convicted today of mail fraud. Chinese citizens Haotian Song and Pengfei Xue developed a scheme in which Apple replaced genuine iPhones with fake iPhones sent for repair.

Between May 2017 and September 2019, Sun and Xue received shipments of inauthentic iPhones from Hong Kong using fake serial numbers and/or IMEI numbers and returned them to Apple retail stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers.

More than 5,000 iPhones were delivered to Apple during this two-year period. Both were convicted of mail fraud and conspiracy to commit mail fraud and faced a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The decision will be announced on June 21, 2024.
