Porto or Antwerp

Telenet is using Nokia’s Network as Code platform to extend its land-based 5G network to ships entering the port of Antwerp.

Nokia announces a partnership with Liberty Global in the port of Antwerp in a press release. Liberty Global is the American parent company of Telenet, which has had a strategic partnership with the Finnish company around mobile network infrastructure for several years. Nokia has opened its network-as-code platform to Telenet’s industrial 5G network. Telenet is testing how this design can be used to guide ships into port more safely and efficiently.

Dynamic geofence

The pilot project, which also involved shipping company Seafar NV and imec, used Nokia’s platform in combination with imec’s Edge Application Middleware. This enables communication with the ship via the 5G network in the port with very low latency. By connecting to cameras and sensors on board the ship, a dynamic “geofence” can be created: a virtual perimeter within which the ship must remain in order to safely enter port.

In the future, this will be combined with AI and machine learning to indicate zones within the perimeter where additional situational awareness is critical. This allows captains to safely maneuver ships through these areas, increasing efficiency and reducing fuel consumption while serving multiple ships simultaneously.
