NYT: US investigated allegations of alleged cartel ties with AMLO allies

US government officials were investigating allegations that allies of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador met with drug cartels and received millions of dollars from those criminal groups to finance his 2018 presidential campaign, according to a report released this Thursday by the agency New York Times.

The journalistic text refers to American records and anonymous sources familiar with the matter.

One of the alleged connections, reported by whistleblowers whose identities have not been disclosed and documented in US security agency reports, involves the children of President López Obrador, who were allegedly caught on video collecting “drug money.”

AMLO criticizes New York Times for his report

In response, López Obrador said the president’s spokesman had received a questionnaire from the New York Times on the issue and denied allegations that he illegally received money from criminal gangs.

He said the report was a response to criticism he leveled at the New York media in an interview broadcast this week with Russian journalist Inna Afinogenova of Canal Red, the YouTube platform of former Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias of Spain.

“They didn’t like it because yesterday a New York Times correspondent sent Jesus (Ramirez, the president’s press secretary) a questionnaire, but in a tone that you’re about to see, threatening, arrogant, letting us know that they were doing an investigation using DEA information ( Drug Enforcement Agency),” he said.
