Google Chrome gets an AI typing assistant

Google Chrome

From now on you can have Google Gemini write short texts for you in Chrome, from comments to blogs, short reviews to filling out contact forms.

Google announced three new AI features for the Chrome browser in January and will begin rolling them out today. The new functions are currently only available to users in the USA and must be explicitly activated there. In addition to new themes that you can design yourself and the Edge-like tab groups, the “Help me write” function stands out.

The function does exactly what the name suggests: it helps you write texts on the Internet. This can range from commenting on blogs or news articles to writing reviews or filling out a message in a contact form, similar to the AI writing feature that Google added to Gmail last summer (but isn’t yet available to everyone). According to Google, this is not intended for letter writing and therefore the feature is based on the basic version of the Gemini model.

Writing with AI

To request typing assistance from Chrome, place the cursor in a text field and right-click to bring up typing assistance. With just a few words you can get the AI on the way to the message you want to write. Help me Write will then make a suggestion, the length and tone of which can be adjusted, among other things, if it doesn’t quite meet your expectations.

Don’t share secrets

There is a limitation. As Google has previously warned, it uses the content of interactions between users and Gemini to train its AI models. So be careful when sharing personal information with Google Gemini. If you want Gemini to keep your secrets, you’ll need to take out a paid subscription to the Workspace suite to access an advanced version of the model.
