Two years ago, Vladimir Putin was very optimistic about his chances of capturing Kyiv… This did not happen. But the invasion continues. In 2022, the Russians did not expect war; the government told them that these rumors were Western hysteria.

Two years into the war, Putin is experiencing an exhaustion that is even slower than his progress in Ukraine. Now Russia has regained the initiative and forced Vladimir Zelensky to defend himself in Donbass. The Russian president appears confident of winning in Ukraine in the long term if American military support for Kyiv ends.

Conversations are dangerous

The street is quiet, demonstrations are prohibited. The Russians didn’t want this war, but most of them don’t want to lose it.

Some ignore it, knowing they cannot change. Others silently curse her. It is dangerous to speak up; people are fired from their jobs for criticizing an intrusion whose purpose is unclear.

Vladimir Putin has put his country on a war footing. At least for industry. The Russian leader remained in power by intensifying both repression and propaganda, despite the sacrifices made by partial military mobilization and Western economic sanctions.
