It’s been a few weeks since Google made the leap from Bard to Gemini, which already has its address (which you’ll be redirected to if you try to access Bard), confirming what many of us have been expecting since the company unveiled its eponymous LLM in early December. The search engine thus adopted an approach similar to the one that Microsoft has taken since September, when it officially stated that its designs based on Prometheus (a variant of GPT modified by those from Redmond) under the Copilot banner.
Except, to show that they are very, very serious about this marketjust a week after this change, Google announced the arrival of the first evolution of LLM, Gemini 1.5, which it claims represents a huge improvement in both performance and efficiency, to the point that the Pro version (the mid-range model that powers the free version of the chatbot service ) offers the same performance as the Ultra version 1.0 variant, but also with lower power consumption in each finish, thanks to the adoption of a technique called Mixture of Experts (MoE). , which allows only certain parts of the model to be activated for each inference.
There is still a lot of room for evolutionThis is clear, it is quite easy to find wrong answers not only in Gemini, but in any of these chatbots and other types of generative models. However, there is no doubt that we are facing a revolutionary technology that will change a lot and that will not stop developing in the short or medium term and in the future will achieve that what already seems more than good to us today will be very short in comparison .
Now, although some of us have already spent many hours exploring the possibilities of Gemini and the like, there are still many people who are still unclear about what can be done with these chatbots. And it’s understandable, both because these are still completely new services, and because their interfaces, given their cleanliness and minimalism, are as a result less informative than some people would like. And I don’t have to go far, because even in my immediate surroundings I have encountered the question “What can I do with Gemini?” on more than one occasion. To make it clearer, let’s look at some options:
Imagine having to write a document in a style you are completely unfamiliar with. You can start looking for examples on the Internet, download templates, spend a lot of time preparing documentation… in short, you can end up investing a few hours in a task that you would rather not have to carry outside.
Or, of course, you can ask Gemini to do it for you, like in the image above, where you can see both the prompt I used and the response I got. Obviously, and this is true in many other cases, what the service offers you can be a starting point or an end point. You can edit the text if you feel it is necessary, but if you are already satisfied with the method offered… then don’t think about it any further, use it exactly as you needed it and then some.
There is a concept that is often repeated when talking about this type of service, and it is the concept of “multimodal”, which is nothing more than the support of different input formats on its part, image and text (already written). or “spoken”) most common. So you can create a prompt that contains an image and text where you indicate what you want it to do in relation to that image.
This will of course depend on the type of service and the type of output you want to get. So when creating an image, you can use an image and indicate through text whether you want it to do something similar, take a specific element from it, if you want it to reproduce it but in a different style… the list of options is, you can imagine , practically infinite.
In the case of a chatbot like Gemini, and as you saw in the screenshot leading this section, a very interesting use is to create a prompt by uploading an image and asking the model to explain what it contains. In the example, as you may have seen, I uploaded our logo and asked the chatbot and, well, you’ve already seen the answer, including typography and color analysis.
There are already services designed specifically for this purpose, like the one we’ll tell you about here, and if you work with Excel regularly, this is probably your best bet. However, if you use the tool sporadically, you’ll probably be more comfortable using a service like Gemini. Of course, and that’s why I gave this example, sometimes you have to be a little pushy until you get the desired result.
As you can see in the image above, I asked the chatbot for a formula to get the result I wanted, but instead it gave me the elements to build it myself. Theoretically, there is no objection, in fact, instead of giving me a fish, he gives me a rod and teaches me how to use it, which I find commendable.
But I don’t want to learn how to fish now, I want a formula now, so I insisted
And now, as you can see, he already gave me the formula… it’s just not correct, because he put a comma as the delimiter of the concatenation elements, when in fact this function is performed with a semicolon. It’s okay, I remind you.
Since I’ve been here, I’ve also taken the opportunity to give you a few more pointers regarding the style I want the formula output to have, and this is what you suggested:
=CONCATENATE(«Minimum value: “;TEXT(MIN(A1:A1000);“0.00”);”; Maximum value: “;TEXT(MAX(A1:A1000);“0.00”);”; Average: «; TEXT(AVERAGE(A1:A1000);”0.00″))
With this example, of course, I want to show one more utility of Gemini, but also to focus on the fact that good users are like good journalists in an interview: if the first answer is not satisfactory, you have to ask it again and again as many times as possible until you reach desired point.
Netherite has robbed diamonds of being the most difficult mineral to find. However, in many cases netherite is only useful in combination with diamond items, so they still play a vital role in the game. Where are the diamonds?
While this is a question we’ve already answered by changing the “depth” of game maps, you may not remember it, so it might be a good question to ask Gemini.
This example is also interesting to me because the answer is correct… but with a small error. As you will see, it states that the best layer (Y coordinate) to find diamonds is -59, and this is quite correct, because from layer -60 we start to find bedrock, which makes it difficult to progress. However, in the second paragraph he states, and I quote, “they are found between layers Y=-64 and Y=16, most often in the upper layers of this range.” That’s not correct, it’s in the lower layers, but in this case Gemini seems to have skipped over – sign 64 to understand that this is actually the lowest layer, and not the highest, of the range in which we can find diamonds.
Of course, from his answer I was interested in the suggestion to use mods that are useful for searching, so I asked him and honestly, as you can see, he suggested a mod (that I did not know) and that I already installed it to use it in my tests pea.
Have you heard of exploitation cuisine? Well, now we will talk about AI for use, which at some point can become AI for survival when the refrigerator is at minimum levels and without being able to buy anything.
To explain it more clearly. Today, Friday, you come home, exhausted from a week’s work and too late/too tired to go shopping. But then you open the fridge and are alarmed to discover a significant lack of food, in addition to the fact that you don’t know what you could do with the four things you have left. Well, don’t worry, you don’t have to call your mom, cook friend, or start looking for recipes, only to find out that even the most basic dishes require a master’s degree in chemistry. Instead, tell a Gemini what you have and surprise him with a proposal.
Not convinced by the first draft? Well, you have two options. The first, as we’ve already seen when we talk about Excel, is to ask a question, but before that, did you notice that the text “View versions” appears on the right above the answer? Gemini will generate three answers for each query, which you can view by viewing that section. Before you ask about other recipes, check this out.
