The United States government rejected this Friday criticism of the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador spoke out against the newspaper this week New York Times during a press conference and defended the freedom of journalists to cover events.
At a press conference, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre was asked about Lopez Obrador’s comments last Thursday in which released the cell phone of an American newspaper correspondent that he is writing an article that could harm him.
“I didn’t see it. But obviously we don’t support that,” the spokesperson responded.
“Important, that the press can freely cover important issues for the American people and in a way that makes them feel safe and protected rather than harassed or attacked. This is something we clearly reject,” Jean-Pierre added.

This Thursday, López Obrador showed a letter from a correspondent New York Times in Mexico Natalie Kitroeva, who included his phone number and profile about the research he did for the article.
The article in question was published following comments from the Mexican President: reveals that an investigation has been open in the United States for many years about drug money that López Obrador’s children and some of his allies allegedly received during the 2018 presidential campaign that elected him president of Mexico.
