The first games in the Tomb Raider saga Undoubtedly, lately they are experiencing a second youth. It is clear that part of this phenomenon is undoubtedly due to nostalgia, a feeling that is quite present in several generations, as has already been more than proven, and which many have known how to exploit for commercial purposes (although it is not the one that we occupy in these reports ). However, it’s not just about nostalgia when talking about titles starring Lara Croft, we also have to admit that they’ve aged wonderfully, except for the graphics.

This is not trivial because we remember it The first Tomb Raider appeared on the market in 1996an incredible 28 years ago, the days when 3D graphics really started to take off on the PC thanks to the legendary Voodoo from 3DFX, the days when the top of the range was determined by 200 MHz Intel Pentium processors (with the new MMX instruction sets) complemented by 64 MB of RAM and around 2 gigabytes of storage (IDE-PATA of course).

As we have mentioned on occasion, the original Tomb Raider was one of the first games for PC that used the then emerging, 32-bit architecture for restoring 3D environments on PC. But it was also very fun, challenging, its protagonist became an icon almost immediately and subsequently not only went down in history, but also played a very influential role in the industry, as a reference for other studios.

Tomb Raider Redux, a more than recommended remake+

So, Every now and then we hear about new projects related to the classics, such as the spectacular result of using path tracking for the first part of the saga. And apparently, the rights holders decided to take advantage of this nostalgia and remaster the original trilogy, which went on sale more than a week ago, and which is generally getting very good reviews, although there are players who are having a hard time getting used to the new control system.

This is how DSOG sounds today amidst so much nostalgia Tomb Raider Redux, a free remake+, created by renowned modder and creator AngelOfDarkness. And you may have noticed that in both the title and this paragraph I added a + symbol to the word remake. Because? Well, because he didn’t limit himself to taking some of the original releases and updating the textures. Instead, it took elements from the original version, others from the anniversary editions, and created a sort of genre mashups to which he also added the content of his own work.

I personally downloaded it and tried it very briefly (barely five minutes) and It left me with a good taste in my mouth and a desire to spend more time on it.. Is it because of nostalgia? Is it because Tomb Raider was and still is a great game? Is it because AngelOfDarkness did a great job again? As I said before, I will have to spend more time answering this question, but my first impression is that, as in other cases, the answer is in the sum of the parts.
