The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) government submitted its resignation to the Palestinian President this Monday. Mahmoud Abbas, the Prime Minister announced Mohamed Shtayyeh.

“I leave the resignation of the government at the disposal of President Mahmoud Abbas. last Tuesday, February 20th, and today I present this in writing,” the prime minister said at the start of a meeting with the entire PPP government cabinet in Ramallah, the occupied West Bank.

Shtayyeh explained that this decision was made “in light of political, security and economic developments related to with aggression against our people in the Gaza Strip, and unprecedented escalation in the West Bank, including the city of East Jerusalem.”

“This comes in light of what our people, our Palestinian cause and our political system are facing: brutal and unprecedented attack, genocide, attempts at forced displacement, famine in Gaza, increasing colonialism, terrorism by the colonialists and repeated invasions of fields and villages in Jerusalem and the West Bank,” the Prime Minister continued to lament.

Shtayyeh also noted “attemptsdismantle the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA), abandon all signed agreements and the gradual annexation of Palestinian lands,” as well as “efforts to transform the Palestinian Authority into a security body without political content.”

The resignation of the entire PNP government comes at a time when a post-war plan for the Gaza Strip is being discussed. it is unknown which entity will assume civilian control of the Palestinian enclavewhere Israel will not allow the Islamist group Hamas to regain power.

“We will continue to resist the occupationThe Palestinian National Authority will continue to fight for the establishment of a state on Palestinian lands against its will,” Shtayyeh added.

Shtayyeh believed that the current government, which has worked for five years and including independent partners such as the five Gaza ministers, has done a good job in difficult circumstances – a pandemic, occupation and a surge in violence – but is committed to “a new phase, the challenges of which require new governmental and political agreements that take into account the new reality in the Gaza Strip and dialogue for the sake of national unity.” .
