The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said the SLIM probe survived the first harsh night on the moon after landing on the Earth satellite.

As reported by Ukrinform, in this regard social networks H stated the agency’s mission statement.

“A command was sent to SLIM last night and a response was received confirming that the spacecraft survived the moonlit night and retained communications capabilities,” JAXA said.

It was noted that communication with SLIM (Smart Lander for Investigating Moon) was terminated after a short time due to the lunar noon still continuing and the temperature of the communication equipment being very high.

“Preparations are underway to resume operations once the temperature of the devices has cooled sufficiently,” JAXA added.

The BBC states that after a successful but difficult landing on the moon in January, the probe was put into “sleep mode” because its solar panels were pointed in the wrong direction and the probe was unable to produce electricity.

Then a change in the direction of sunlight allowed the probe to send images back to Earth, but it turned off again when moonlit night came.

JAXA said at the time that SLIM was not designed for harsh lunar nights.

A day on the Moon lasts almost 15 days, and the night lasts the same.

As reported by Ukrinform, SLIM was launched in September 2023 together with the X-ray space telescope XRISM.

On January 19, the Japanese lander landed on the moon but lost power a few hours later.
