The new Windracers ULTRA aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), developed with the participation of British Antarctic Service (BAS) researchers, recently completed a test flight of approximately 720 kilometers in the harsh conditions of Antarctica.
The new drone is a fully autonomous aircraft with a wingspan of 10 metres, capable of carrying payloads of up to 100 kilograms over distances of up to 1,000 kilometres. Thanks to the autopilot system, Windracers ULTRA can take off, hover and land safely with minimal human intervention.
The device was designed to collect a wide range of scientific data about the environment on the icy continent. With its help, scientists will be able to study the structures of the ice sheet of the continent, as well as the processes occurring in the ocean and atmosphere of Antarctica.
