The livestock sector has long demanded this regulation because it believes that terms such as “vegetarian schnitzel” confuses shoppers in supermarkets where in recent years the shelves have been filled with meatless, vegetarian products, but with names that refer to types of meat or cuts.

The French government already tried to resolve this issue by decree in June last year, but the Council of State suspended it.

New text sets two lists Conditions reserved for products of animal origin or that contain very little plant protein.

“Terms that must not be used to refer to foods containing plant proteins” include: fillet, tenderloin, schnitzel, steak, ham or shoulder.

Terms relating to names of species or groups e.animal species or animal morphology and anatomyare also prohibited when marketing or promoting a product containing plant proteins.

Some terms may be used to refer to food products. “of animal origin, which may contain vegetable proteins”, subject to the maximum percentage of plant ingredients.

These are products containing plant ingredients “They are not a substitute for animal products.but are added as an addition to the latter in the context of these montages.”

Some examples: bacon, chorizo, pastrami, pate, sausages or ham. The maximum vegetable protein content ranges from 0.1% in a liquid whole egg to 5% in sausage.

The use of terms from the animal kingdom to refer to scents is also still permitted.

The decree published on Tuesday will come into force in three months and provides for maximum fines of 1,500 euros for individuals and 7,500 euros for companies. There is a transition period of one year for the liquidation of shares.
