We saw all kinds of oddities and curiosities at MWC, but one of the ones that caught our attention the most was the Wowmouse. This is an application that we learned about at the last CES in Las Vegas, which in a few words can turn our smartwatch with WearOS into a mouse to control the computer using gestures. It is undoubtedly a very strange practice.

How does it work? As Doublepoint, the company behind the app, explains, Wowmouse turns the watch into a Bluetooth HID (Human Interface Device) and connects it to compatible systems such as Windows, Android, Linux, macOS, and iPadOS. Once installed, we only need to move our hand to move the cursor and touch our index finger and thumb to click.

All watches with WearOS. The app currently only works on smartwatches with WearOS for one simple reason: Apple Watches do not support Bluetooth HID. However, the company confirms that they are working on Pixel Watch 2 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, 5 and 6. Other brands like Xiaomi or Mobvoi were not mentioned but support is expected to arrive at some point.

beyond curiosity. Although it is true that Wowmouse attracts attention with its ability to control the computer, the company aims to go further. This technology also works with augmented and virtual reality devices, and it’s not hard to imagine use cases. For example, let’s consider playing a shooter and moving the crosshairs just by moving our hand. It can also be integrated with home automation to control the intensity of a light bulb by turning your wrist in one direction or another.

something bigger. Users with smartwatches running WearOS can download Wowmouse completely free of charge from the Google Play Store. There is nothing bad. It’s a free app, an interesting feature… Makes sense. The company actually intends to license this technology to other companies to implement it in their own products, which is why they’re offering an evaluation kit that includes a bracelet, algorithms, and tools.
