Lenovo presented a revolutionary concept at MWC 2024 from Barcelona. This is a model laptop known as Project Crystal, a device with a completely transparent screen. Although it’s just a proof of concept at the moment, this innovative device could change the way we perceive laptops and also carry over to other products like smart TVs, mobile devices, etc. And it’s not the first time the brand has attempted something like this.

Project Crystal is not only a transparent screen, but also includes a a camera on the back that could be used for augmented reality, along with AI and object recognition. This means that the screen will have dual functionality. On the one hand, visualize information as the output peripheral that it is, and also take advantage of this transparency to visualize objects thanks to AR. Designers may find this feature useful as they can overlay a schematic over the actual object.

The screen is made with micro LED panel and the laptop ditches the traditional physical keyboard in favor of a touch one to give this Lenovo design a more futuristic look. Unfortunately, the concept is only a demonstration and is not intended to become a real product in the short term. It’s simply a demonstration by Lenovo showing off the capabilities of the new microLED displays and AI integration.

Transparent films and the new Intel Core Ultra

Intel Core Ultra

This transparent laptop is not the only thing that the Chinese company presented at Mobile World Congress 2024. Lenovo also took the opportunity to introduce line of laptops and hybrid devices for businessall feature a new dedicated button to use the Microsoft Copilot chatbot.

Among the announced models are ThinkPad T14 Gen 5, ThinkPad T16 Gen 3, ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 2 and ThinkBook 14 2-in-1 Gen 4, all powered by the latest Intel Core Ultra processors. The 14th generation of Intel Core processors was a revolution in terms of previous monolithic units, using a structure of “tiles” connected by an interposer using advanced 3D packaging.

The new Intel Core Ultra also features something interesting that fits perfectly with Lenovo’s commitment to AI, which is that it will include integrated NPU (Neural Processing Unit), i.e. a processor unit designed specifically for AI workloads to improve performance in that regard. In this way, Intel is following the same steps already taken by other competitors like Apple, Qualcomm, Apple, etc. Something very positive considering the growing demand for AI applications running locally.

In addition, these laptops also come with some another interesting development for the business environment. For example:

  • Corning Gorilla Glass: The tempered glass protection against impacts and scratches common to many mobile devices now also comes to the Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 2. The hybrid tablet/notebook can be configured with powerful hardware and combines the best of both worlds.
  • DIY repairs: If you like Do It Yourself, the new ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 and T16 Gen 3 were designed with this in mind, as the Chinese company’s iFixit team recommended that the laptops be easily replaceable thanks to modularity with DIMM memory, Among other things, M.2 cards for SSD , a separate WWAN card and a non-integrated battery. Something that is also in line with EU policy and the right to rectification.

Of course, the hardware has also been updated higher performance and efficiencyand the profiles have been redesigned to be thinner and lighter. A powerful professional tool available from April when the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 and ThinkPad go on sale in March. Prices will start at €950, €1,400 and €1,179 depending on the configuration chosen.
