Air Glass 3 is the new augmented reality glasses that Oppo presented in the prototype phase at the Barcelona Mobility Fair. A new attempt, in the heat of more advanced viewers like the Apple Vision Pro, in a segment that has so far failed even after the attempt of giants like Google with its Glass.
Air Glass 3 are almost indistinguishable from regular glasses. However, in the upper corner they hide a virtual screen which according to Oppa “it’s the best full-color display of its kind”. Its weight is only 50 grams should not be a problem with long-term use such as “the lightest in the world”.
The glasses are put on by touching the frame to activate an AI-powered assistant that can be commanded voice commands. You can also use touch interface (maximum eye brightness of 1000 nits) for voice calls, listening to music, viewing photos and performing similar tasks.
They have glasses four microphones and noise isolation, which means we should be able to listen to music in high quality without disturbing other people around. In addition, reverse sound field technology, an open acoustic design and other innovations that improve noise isolation should offer greater privacy protection.
The assistant is working on a smartphone app with generative AI features. The application accesses the Oppo owns a large language model (LLM) called AndesGPT. The company says (as everyone does) that AI has long been a major area of investment and development, and that the company “has taken a number of steps to elevate artificial intelligence to the center of its long-term growth strategy”. Here comes the OPPO AI Center established a few weeks ago, designed as a center to better focus the company’s resources on AI research and development and to support the exploration of cutting-edge technologies and user-centric applications.
Oppo’s language model isn’t available outside of China, so we’re guessing there won’t be a global launch anytime soon. Anyway, the Air Glass 3 is still in the prototype stage, and as we’ve seen in the past, this type of product isn’t easy to design, develop and sell. The fiasco of Google Glass, a device that ended up in the “elephant graveyard” of the search giant, was a warning for navigators. We applaud Oppo for venturing into this segment. We’ll see.
