After five months, Proximus stopped 16 million fake text messages thanks to new AI software, partly supported by the government.

Since October last year, both Proximus and Telenet have been using new AI-based software that prevents fake text messages. This partially government-backed software appears to be doing its job, stopping about 16 million fake text messages in five months. Work is also currently underway on cybersecurity for emails.

AI software for smishing

Since October last year, both Proximus and Telenet have been using new AI-based software that prevents fake text messages. After two weeks, the software was able to stop 3.2 million fake SMS messages, and 5 months later the count is at 16 million.

The purpose of this AI software is to prevent smishing, which are fraudulent text messages that attempt to obtain sensitive information from recipients. This includes banking details or clicking on malware.

Support the government

The telecommunications companies Proximus and Telenet received government support for this project. Federal Minister of Telecommunications Petra De Sutter made two million euros available for this new recognition software. In the next phase, they want to pay more attention to the cybersecurity of email messages.

Threat actors use fake phishing emails to attempt to obtain sensitive information via email. Proximus is already working on stopping phishing emails from customers. According to De Sutter, the testing phase of this fake email software will begin in the spring.
