Supreme Court to decide whether Trump has immunity in election interference case

Supreme Court from the United States agreed to solve If former Republican President Donald Trump has immunity or maybe court for interfering in the 2020 presidential election.

The issue of presidential immunity has become a sticking point in the various cases that the US Department of Justice has brought against Trump, and especially in Washington, D.C., for attempting to overturn the 2020 result when the tycoon lost the election to Joe Biden.

Trump’s lawyers have asked for the decision to be suspended, warning of dire consequences for the presidency if such immunity is not granted.

Trump is the first former president to face criminal charges.

Trump is the favorite to win the Republican nomination to challenge Biden, a Democrat, in the November 5 US election.

The case again pits the nation’s highest court in the race as justices must decide whether to overturn a Colorado Supreme Court decision that excluded Trump from the state’s Republican primary based on a constitutional provision regarding insurrection.

The judges set the week of April 22 for an oral hearing on one issue:

Whether and to what extent a former president enjoys presidential immunity from prosecution for conduct allegedly related to official acts while in office.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled 3-0 on Feb. 6 against Trump’s immunity claim, rejecting his bid for “unfettered power to commit crimes that neutralize the most fundamental check on the executive branch: recognition and enforcement of election results.”

Trump has pleaded not guilty in an attempt to portray them as politically motivated.

In a filing with the Supreme Court, the billionaire’s lawyers said the months-long criminal trial would “radically undermine” their client’s ability to campaign against Biden.

They also warned of dire consequences for future presidents if Trump is allowed to be impeached, including partisan persecution, extortion, blackmail and more. (EFE and Reuters)
