Mars Express, the European Space Agency’s (ESA) automatic interplanetary station, has taken an interesting photo of the terrain of the Red Planet’s north pole.

This is stated in the ESA press release, as reported by Ukrinform.

This region of Mars’ north pole is known as the Northern Plain (Planum Boreum).

The pole itself is covered in fine layers of dust and water ice. They are several kilometers thick and about 1000 km long.

The left side of this image is dominated by a huge, long strip of undulating sand dunes that stretches for more than 150 km in this frame alone.

This “wrinkled” appearance contrasts with the “smooth” terrain seen at right in the Mars Express High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) image.

This “smooth” region shows no obvious signs of erosion and has been spared the impact of rocks from space; This shows that the surface is very young and is probably renewed every year.

Between these two extremes are two semicircular rocks, the largest of which is about 20 km wide.

Mars Express has been orbiting the Red Planet since 2003. It photographs the surface of Mars, maps its minerals, determines the composition and circulation of its rarefied atmosphere, and investigates its subsurface crust and how various events interact in the Martian environment.

As Ukrinform reports, astronomers have discovered three previously unknown moons around Uranus and Neptune, the most distant planets of the Solar System.
