The Nova-C automatic lander made a soft “lunch” on February 23, 2024, but landed almost sideways. After a week of briefing on how and why this happened, Intuitive Machines announced that problems with navigation equipment caused the descending machine to stop earlier than expected.
Once the rover reached the lunar surface, Nova-C’s main engine continued to operate. At the same time, one or more landing struts broke and the engine nozzle came into contact with the lunar regolith. The module was then tilted sideways.
Despite the problems, the device has retained partial functionality, maintaining communications and transmitting data to Earth. It is assumed that Nova-C will operate for a few more days.
