Apple’s strategy backfired as Android users opted for older, cheaper iPhones

Competition in the smartphone market is increasing day by day. Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and many other brands are competing fiercely to sell more phones than their competitors and become the market leader. But this rivalry is just one layer. Besides all this chaos, Apple and Google are also fighting for the best mobile operating system. So who is running the race? A recent study provided us with insights into the behavior of iOS and Android users.

Android users opt for older, cheaper iPhones when switching

As we all know, changing habits can be quite difficult. Admittedly, after years of using Android or iOS, switching to another can be even more difficult. With all this said, some users are brave enough to try something new. Consumer Intelligence Research Partners LLC uncovered these users’ habits. For example, in the last five years, the percentage of users switching from Android to iOS has fluctuated between 10-15%. The number of Android users switching to iOS varies by year as follows:

  • 2019-13%
  • 2020-11%
  • 2021-11%
  • 2022-15%
  • 2023-13%

What’s interesting are the preferences of users who switch. Apple releases iPhone models with more powerful processors every year. However, in the last few years, this efficiency has gone beyond necessity. This makes older iPhones a much better option. On the other hand, price and performance-oriented Android users prefer older iPhones over expensive models when switching.

In 2023, only 21% of existing iPhone users upgrading to these models chose the iPhone SE 3, 12 or 13/13 mini, while 29% chose the iPhone SE 3, 12 or 13/13 mini. However, the majority of Android switchers (51%) still prefer the newer iPhone 14 series. This shows that although price is a factor for those coming from Android, many are willing to invest in Apple’s latest technology.
