The U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Innovation Division (DIU) has announced two contracts to develop prototypes to demonstrate power generation for next-generation nuclear engines and spacecraft. The Pentagon plans to launch a demonstration orbital flight in 2027, according to Space.com, citing the DIU.

Contracts with Ultra Safe Nuclear and Avalanche Energy. Manufacturers will develop demonstrators of nuclear power plants for small spacecraft that will operate in lunar space.

Ultra Safe Nuclear is working on the radioisotope energy source EmberCore. The DIU says EmberCore will deliver ten times more power than plutonium systems.

Avalanche Energy’s Orbitron will use fusion to generate electricity. Orbitron plans to hold the plasma in a magnetic field. It is stated that the development of Avalanche Energy can be used as a motor and energy source.
