US President Joe Bidenand Donald trumphis likely Republican opponent in the November election, held duel visits to the US-Mexico borderwhile the large influx of immigrants became the dominant issue for voters.

Biden, who has been defensive on the issue, used the visit to Brownsville, Texas, is trying to embarrass Republican lawmakers for abandoning a bipartisan effort to tighten immigration policies after Trump told them not to approve them, and for achieving a political victory.

Biden met with Border Patrol agents, as well as customs and law enforcement officials.

The Democratic president took office in 2021 promising to reverse Trump’s hard-line immigration policies, but he has since toughened his approach.

Biden threatened to close the border with Mexico

Under pressure from Republicans who accuse him of failing to control the border, Biden in 2023 asked Congress for more funding to enforce the law and said he would “close the border” if given the power to return migrants.

The White House is also considering using executive action to deny asylum to more migrants at the border, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Biden will be joined by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, whom Republican lawmakers voted earlier this month to remove from office over his oversight of the border.

However, the Democratic-led Senate is unlikely to vote to remove Mayorkas from office.

Trump visited Eagle Pass

Trump, who served as president from 2017 to early 2021, has made a tough stance on the border his calling card.

The tycoon visited Eagle Pass, Texas, where border crossings have become a major problem for authorities in recent months.

Caroline Leavitt, the Trump campaign’s national press secretary, called the border a “crime scene” in a statement and said Trump would outline a plan during the visit to “secure the border immediately upon taking office.”

But Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer tried to blame Trump for the failed border deal in a speech Thursday morning.

“When Donald Trump goes on camera to bemoan the disaster at the border, he should look in the mirror,” Schumer said.

Trump was accompanied by Texas Governor Greg. Abbottwhose administration is building a military “base camp” in Eagle Pass to deter migrants.

Eagle Pass remains a flashpoint in the heated partisan debate over border security, even as the number of migrants caught crossing the border illegally both there and through Brownsville fell sharply in January and February. (Reuters)
