Controversial initiative law advance in Arizona Legislature this would allow ranchers whose land borders Mexico murder migrants cross your property without incurring criminal charges.

The bill (HB-2842), promoted by Republicans, would thus expand a law known in the state as “Castle Doctrine” which allows a person to use deadly force against a person or persons who are trespassing or entering their home to cause harm.

Republican state legislator Justin Heap told the state Legislature that his proposal would expand that law, ending what he considers technicalities.

Heap argued that the changes are necessary because of an increase in the number of illegal migrants crossing ranches at the border, which he believes makes ranchers vulnerable.

The law currently only protects a person if they use deadly force within the confines of their home or residence, but by changing the word “house” instead of “property” allows ranchers greater exposure to the law.

This way, ranchers’ lands will be included even if they are far from their home.

If approved, the legislation would exempt ranchers who shoot migrants on their land who believe they pose a danger to themselves or their families from any charges.

Democratic lawmakers have criticized the measure, saying it only seeks to legalize the use of racial discrimination and this will endanger the lives of many people.
