Manuel Guerrero, a Mexican detained in Qatar, already has access to antiretroviral drugs: SRE

Manuel Guerrero, Mexican man arrested in Qatar for being gayalready has access to antiretroviral drugs, which he takes regularly because he is HIV positive.

This was reported by the Foreign Ministry via X, where they assured that “the authorities of both countries have confirmed that he is already taking medication regularly.”

The publication in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicates that contact is maintained with Enrique Guerrero, Manuel’s brother, in order to have constant information about the situation of a compatriot detained in an Arab country.

Finally, SRE thanked the Mexican and British embassies in Qatar for their work and attention, as Manuel is a citizen of both countries.

“Both countries will remain in contact and support to take care of Manuel’s case and his health.”

Mexican man jailed for being gay and HIV positive

Manuel Guerrero was arrested in Doha, the capital of Qatar, after attending a meeting arranged through the Grindr app. There he was arrested by Qatari police.

The Qatari authorities themselves created a fake profile and advised Manuel to go with more people from the LGBTI community.

LGBT+ groups said Qatari agents planted a quarter gram of methamphetamine on him, jailed him and were subjected to acts of psychological torture.

In addition, they reported that they did not allow him to take the antiretroviral drugs needed to live with HIV.

On Wednesday, February 18, the Mexican Embassy in Qatar, in a statement published on social media, said it would seek “international cooperation” to guarantee the well-being and integrity of the detainee, as well as his reunification with his family as soon as possible.

However, the day before, on Tuesday, he explained that due to his dual citizenship (British and Mexican) he could not interfere in the case.

“Because the party concerned registered his residence in Qatar as a citizen of the United Kingdom, and the consulate of that country in Doha was the responsible and recognized person by the Qatari authorities to carry out consular procedures on his behalf.”
