Authorities say the woman and her partner were pitching a tent in Dumka district, a remote area of Jharkhand state, to spend the night on Friday when a group of seven men attacked them while they were sleeping.
She is at a local hospital receiving medical care.
The local police registered a complaint of assault and gang rape.
In his first press conference after the incident, local police superintendent Singh Kherwar said the victim had “identified seven people involved in the crime.”
He added that three of them were detained and interrogated.
“This is a condemnable incident and police are taking appropriate action. The culprits will not be spared,” Mithilesh Kumar Thakur, regional minister of Jharkhand state, told the press.
The Spanish Embassy in India contacted authorities and sent consular personnel to the region.

The husband of a Spanish woman who was attacked and gang-raped while on holiday on a motorbike tour in northern India has said his wife was raped by seven men while receiving death threats in their tent.
“They attacked us in the store, beat us, put a knife to our throats and said they were going to kill us, and seven men raped her,” the man said.
