A Spanish woman of Brazilian origin, who together with her husband was brutally attacked last Friday in a remote province in northeastern India, told this Sunday in an interview with EFE how she was raped by seven men several times over the course of two or three hours, but who despite this is, grateful to be alive.
“All seven of them raped me several times. While two or three were watching him (the husband), two or three would come and take turns,” explained the seasoned traveler who, along with her brutally beaten husband, traveled the world on a motorcycle and camped on a secluded esplanade. in the village of Kunji in Jharkhand state.
At a government safe house in the Dumka region, about 50 kilometers from the site of the attack, and under constant police surveillance, the Spanish couple described how seven men, who police said were between 18 and 30 years old, kept their husbands naked, tied up and beaten , while two or three others mocked her.
“I didn’t see her and thought they had killed her,” he says, who spent the entire time on the ground being hit and kicked.
In a detailed account of the incident, she explains that after about three hours, she believed “they were tired or didn’t want to take any more risks” and that one of them let her get dressed before leaving the bushes where they were.
The couple, who came to court this Sunday to give evidence to the judge, explain that unlike many other places in India where they have traveled, they do not usually camp, not for safety reasons, but because “there are a lot of of people”. and there is no “They’ll leave you alone.”
The two victims, who appear calm and happy to be alive, insist on their experiences as travelers during an interview with EFE in the presence of three police officers.
“We traveled to 66 countries, 170,000 km. We spent several months in Africa, the Middle East, Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and a lot of time in other places,” he says, recalling that she was the first woman to enter Afghanistan on a motorcycle (during the Taliban era) .
The two travelers plan to leave India on Tuesday on a motorcycle for Nepal, from where they will fly to Spain.
Police, having already identified all the suspects, have given special attention to the case, which has attracted much media attention in India, partly because the victims were two foreigners.
“We hope this will help ensure that the punishments are severe, here in India the punishments are severe and anyone who thinks of doing something like this should think twice,” he comments, insisting that despite these cases, India is a country confident that like the rest of Asia.
Rape is a burden that affects the whole of India, and Jharkhand is among the top 10 provinces with the highest number of sexual assault and rape cases, along with Rajasthan and New Delhi.
India’s latest crime report, corresponding to 2022, recorded 31,500 rape cases in that year alone, approximately 86 rapes per day.
In the crime report, a very small percentage, less than 2%, are foreign victims, although this may be partly due to the difficulty of non-citizen women, in some cases tourists, in bringing police cases, as well as a lack of trust in the authorities.
Dumka and its surroundings have never been hospitable.
The region has basic infrastructure and a large part of its population is poor, marginalized, with very low literacy rates and without privileges. EFE
