The European Parliament has approved the introduction of digital ID cards for European citizens.
On Thursday, Parliament approved the digital ID regulation with 335 yes votes. This so-called digital wallet stores personal data of all EU citizens. As soon as the EU Council of Ministers gives its approval, it will be implemented into law. The European Parliament emphasizes that the introduction of the digital identity card can be carried out on a voluntary basis.
Can be used voluntarily
The digital ID or digital wallet stores your personal information in a digital location. It allows citizens to identify themselves and choose which personal data they want to share (online and offline) with companies and authorities across the EU. This digital solution emerged due to the increasing digitalization of various public and private services.
The European Parliament emphasizes that the digital wallet can be used on a voluntary basis and that there is no discrimination against people who do not choose to use the digital wallet. They strive for an inclusive digital system.
The ordinance received a majority of votes on Thursday. Now we have to wait for an agreement from the Council of Ministers before it becomes law.
