Lenovo is working on its own line of refurbished hardware. This aims to reduce the carbon footprint of computers and servers while saving customers money.
Lenovo announced this at MWC in Barcelona Certified and refurbished by Lenovo At. With this solution, the manufacturer would like to offer its own computers and servers again. Lenovo (or certified technicians) clean and repair devices for resale.
First, computers and servers are completely emptied. In addition, Lenovo supplies all devices and components. If necessary, parts will be replaced with original spare parts. In the current plan, Lenovo offers a minimum one-year warranty with the option to extend it to three years.
As a customer, you will generally receive devices that look like new, although Lenovo will clearly state on the (original) packaging that the contents are refurbished. The company rightly points out that reuse is the most environmentally friendly use of hardware. Devices given a second life provide customers with the hardware they need without the carbon footprint of production.
Of course, the devices are also becoming cheaper. It’s not yet clear which laptops and servers Lenovo will offer as refurbished. In the long term, Lenovo would like to give almost the entire portfolio a second life, although of course this depends on how and for how long the original customer uses the devices. Lenovo is initially launching its second-hand service in France, Germany, Denmark and the UK. The service will later be available worldwide.
Lenovo didn’t invent hot water here. Its major competitor HPE has been striving to reuse servers for much longer and has two “renewal centers” for this purpose, one of them in Europe. Dell also offers refurbished servers. From a sustainability perspective, it is very good that Lenovo is now also participating.
