EU fines Apple 1.8 billion euros for anti-competitive conditions in music services

The European Union imposed an anti-monopoly penalty of 1.8 billion euros on technology giant Apple.

As reported by Ukrinform, DW.

According to the European Commission, the company unfairly favored its own music streaming service over those of its competitors.

“The Commission found that Apple imposed restrictions on app developers that prevented them from informing iOS users about alternative and cheaper music subscription services,” the European Commission said in a statement. said.

It is emphasized that this is illegal according to EU antitrust rules.

Apple receives a 30% commission from sales made through applications on the iOS operating system. The company also prohibits programs on its operating system from linking to external registration pages to bypass its commission.

European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said the European Commission had instructed Apple to lift the ban and avoid similar practices in the future.

“From now on, Apple will have to allow music streaming developers to communicate freely with their users,” he said.

Vestager added that the lump sum of €1.8 billion was applied as a deterrent because the base amount of the fine, which he likened to a “parking ticket”, would be quite small.

It was noted that the fine of 1.8 billion euros corresponded to 0.5 percent of Apple’s global turnover.

Apple said the biggest beneficiary of the decision was Swedish streaming service Spotify, which sells subscriptions through its own website rather than Apple’s app store.

The company also announced that it would appeal the decision.
