Gun smuggling and crime in Latin America and Caribbean worry UN

High Commissioner UN for human rights, Volker Türk, today called on countries Latinos and from Caribbean cooperate with each other in the fight against drug smuggling weapon and crime, taking coordinated action to punish transnational crimes.

“There is a need for improved international cooperation to address the illicit arms trade and ensure accountability for transnational crimes,” Türk said today at a meeting of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva.

In its report on the global human rights situation, The High Commissioner said that the lives of people in Latin America and the Caribbean are being disrupted by the expansion of violence gangs and organized crimeor both acted in complicity.

In particular, he mentioned cases Ecuador, Haiti, Honduras and Mexicowhere this situation would be more obvious.

The UN human rights chief said punitive and paramilitary responses by authorities had in some cases led to Violation of an individual’s rightswhich, he warned, could further worsen the level of violence.

He argued that “only policies based on human rights can offer effective solutions” and that these are long-term in nature and a way must be found to solve entrenched problems such as corruption, That impunity, poor management and discrimination.

Turk dedicated a section of his speech to the alarming situation of gun violence that is occurring in several Caribbean countries, such as Jamaica, where a state of emergency has been declared several times.

He thought it was commendable that Caribbean Community (Caricom) took on the task of maintaining world and stability in the region through combating the illicit arms trade and commitment to sustainable development.

He also commended Caricom for its efforts to ensure a regional delegation to the UN Human Rights Office.
