Damage to global internet cables in the Red Sea disrupted data traffic

Hong Kong-based HGC Global Communications said the cables are part of its Asia-Africa-Europe 1, Europe-India Gateway, Seacom and TGN-Gulf networks.

The rebels deny involvement in the attack and blame it on military operations by Great Britain and the United States, without providing any evidence.

Seacom, which serves Djibouti, said the damage occurred within the maritime jurisdiction of Yemen in the southern Red Sea. The company said it was rerouting traffic and may change it, even though some services were closed.

Tata Communications, the Indian conglomerate that owns the Seacom-TGN-Gulf line, said it “immediately took appropriate measures to rectify the situation” following the outage.

Internet will be monitored in the Red Sea

The EU agreed to launch a military operation to protect commercial shipping in the Red Sea from Houthi attacks that have intensified in recent months. The operation will involve the naval and air forces of several EU countries, including Germany and Belgium, which will provide the frigate Louise-Marie.

The Houthis are a Shiite rebel group that has been fighting against the internationally recognized government of Yemen since 2014 with the support of Iran. The conflict has caused a humanitarian crisis in the country, with millions of people facing hunger and disease.
