With AWS, customers can now retrieve large amounts of data from the cloud for free to migrate to another platform.

AWS is following Google Cloud and will no longer charge customers who want to switch providers. The abolition of the so-calledExit fees” allows users to permanently extract large amounts of data from AWS for free. This change results from the legal requirements of the Digital Services Act (DSA), which must enable fair competition.

Legal requirements

According to AWS, the offer is aimed at users who want to permanently remove large amounts of data from AWS. The removal of this fee is not based on generosity, but rather has to do with the new legal requirements that AWS must meet. The Digital Services Act, announced earlier this year, stipulates that fair competition must be promoted by making it easier for customers to switch from one provider to another.

Although AWS already allows the free transfer of 100 gigabytes of data in its offering, that is far from enough for most large AWS customers. Due to the high costs associated with exporting more than 100 Gygabite, many organizations were stuck in the AWS cloud.

Work

The company wrote in a blog post how customers can use this free service. For this purpose, they should contact support before deleting the cloud. Once approved by AWS, the customer will receive a series of outbound data transfer credits to complete the migration. Customers have 60 days to complete the migration.
