The Israeli planning authority approved this Wednesday permits to build nearly 3,500 housing units in West Bank settlementsmost of them in Ma’ale Adumim, the first measure of this kind since June 2023.

He National Planning and Building Council gives green light up to 3,476 housing units: 2,452 in Ma’ale Adumim, 694 in Efrat and 330 in Kedar, despite the settlements being illegal under international law, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

The decision was welcomed by Israel’s finance minister, a far-right party. Bezalel Smotrichwho also heads the aforementioned building permitting committee, assured that the authorities “They continue to build the country.”

“In addition to building permits, “We will make big investments in developing transport infrastructure, employment and quality of life.”Smotrich announced this in a post on social networks. Xspecifying that over the past year, 18,515 building permits were issued in localities.

Israel’s finance minister later added.

The National Planning and Building Council has not met since June 2023 due to the conflict sparked by the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks that sparked an Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip.
