Google announced the changes it has made to its mobile application ecosystem in line with the entry into force of the European Digital Markets Act (DMA). The company plans to impose new fees on developers even if they distribute outside the Play Market; Apple did the same for the App Store.
Initially, for two years, Google’s commission will be 10% on in-app purchases and 5% on subscription services. It covers the services provided by the app store from initial user acquisition. The ongoing platform service fee will be 17% for in-app purchases and 7% for subscription services, which cover platform services including parental controls, security features, fraud prevention and app updates.
After two years, developers may waive ongoing payments if users agree, but platform services will not be provided. “Since users purchased the app from Play expecting services such as parental controls, security browser, anti-fraud, and ongoing app updates, terminating services also requires user consent.”– Google announced.
“Play commissions support our investments in Android and Google Play, including allowing us to distribute Android for free and fund an ever-growing set of tools and services that help developers build successful businesses while maintaining security.” “It is one of our platforms for billions of users around the world, reflecting the value provided by— Google added.
